RULE ONE: Use the right shampoo and conditioner
First, understand your hair type and use the right type of shampoo and conditioner. If you have combination hair for instance - greasy roots and dry ends - just use conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends, where it's needed. And rinse well. Don't rinse your hair in your bath water - you need clean water and lots of it. If you don't wash and rinse your hair properly, you're destined for a bad hair day!
RULE TWO: Choose the best style for your hair type
Some hair cuts are easy to care for because they work with your hair type. If you choose a style that doesn't work with your hair type - for instance, a sleek bob with curly hair - then you'll have to spend lots of time trying to style it. And unless you're going from one extreme to the other - that is, going from straight to curly or vice versa - you shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to style your hair.
RULE THREE: Use the right styling products in the right places
These days, using a single styling product all over isn't going to give you the best results. Maybe you need to build body, in which case you should use a thickening styling product on the roots and mid-lengths. Or maybe you need to calm down curly or frizzy ends, in which case you can use a serum just on the ends of your hair. RULE FOUR: Vary your styling technique to suit your hair
How good your technique is will determine how good your hair will look. Get to know your hair to determine what parts need what type of styling to suit your cut and the look you want. For instance, you may just need to give your style some body around the crown area, or maybe it just needs a few pin curls at the front to give it a bit of lift in one area. Be specific with your styling technique - you'll get a much more modern look
RULE FIVE: Finishing products
To put that extra finishing touch to your style, get in the habit of using a finishing product such as a shine serum or hold spray. They are so effective, they can make all the difference to the way your hair looks all day long. Even if you've let your hair dry naturally and haven't used any styling products, by working in some finishing product your hair can still look fabulous.
